AutoCAD Map 3D 2009 is the only one of the product in Autodesk, it has been certified by Citrix XenApp softwares. So it can be claimed that it supports multi-platform (e.g. Windows, Linux & OS X). I have tested and captured some screen shots as following:

Because I received the XenApp which is installed in the image of VMware, so I use VMware Fusion of Macbook pro to open and run it. The operating system is the Windows Server 2003. 2G of ram is allocated.

Today the user asks how to create or delete feature data. I think this is very simple task. Just use copy/ remove command or create new feature from geometry.... But she said it really doesn't work!!!

Eventually I know why, it caused by "data join". The feature data has connected one external table. Actually you can create new object, but the map 3D will be run very unstable and hang up finally. It's better to disconnect the data join first and then create new feature objects.

Recently I requested by an end user to test how to good manage file conversion from sdf to shp. They have produced a lot of sdf file in their project. They concern how to add new field to existing feature data and how to convert it to shapefile. Basically I uses the follow step(1-mapimport the sdf with proper object data attribute -> 2-mapexport to shp).

Autodesk is moving beyond drawing-based CAD. On May 7, 2008, Autodesk, Inc. announced that it has acquired substantially all of the assets of REALVIZ S.A., a developer of image-based content creation software.

In the CAD file, you can check these entities properties e.g. layer, linetype, rotation, size...; in certain case if you need to classify all CAD annotation to feature data e.g. CAD to SDF, all annotation will be converted to point feature. It can be added label for each points, but the orientation for all label are zero degree. How can the CAD properties e.g. rotation be extracted and assigned to feature data? I would like to introduce the one of new feature in Map 3D 2009. The command is called "mapfeaturesplit" & "mapfeaturemerge". It able to split/ merge feature data seamlessly and provides the tools called "split & merge rules" to handling the data attribute for those data objects.

There is two options if you do mapfeaturesplit:
1 - It supports all AutoCAD command for snapping feature object when you doing the split feature object action. You can precisely snap the object and split the object.
2 - It can be based on the existing line entity to split the object.

In the Map 3D 2009, it able to do "mapimport" and "object classification" at the same time. So it doesn't need to select entities manually for doing object classification. It provides very efficiency platform to migrate CAD to GIS.
